Our Story

A journey of love for Ireland's rarest terrier.

Our love affair with the Glen of Imaal Terrier began when we first encountered this remarkable breed. From the moment we met our first Glen, we were captivated by their unique combination of strength and gentleness, spirit and calm.

The Glen of Imaal Terrier, named after the remote valley in County Wicklow, Ireland, is one of the country's four native terrier breeds and by far the rarest. These sturdy little dogs, with their distinctive wheaten or brindle coats and expressive eyes, stole our hearts completely.

At Finnabair Glens, we are dedicated to preserving this wonderful breed while producing healthy, well-tempered companions. Every puppy we raise is a cherished member of our family first, bred with careful attention to health, temperament, and breed standard.

The Glen of Imaal: A Piece of Irish History

The Glen of Imaal Terrier takes its name from the remote Glen of Imaal valley in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland. This rugged region shaped a hardy, versatile breed that served as an all-purpose farm dog.

Historically, Glens were used as "turnspit dogs" - running on a wheel to turn meat over the fire. They were also formidable badger hunters and general vermin controllers. Their low-to-ground build and powerful forequarters made them perfect for going to ground after quarry.

Today, the Glen of Imaal Terrier is recognized as one of Ireland's national treasures - a rare breed that deserves preservation and celebration. We are honored to play a small part in keeping this piece of Irish heritage alive.
